Why DOTS

It all started with Data Oriented Programming

When I started to work at the studio, my programming skills were kind of weak because I hadn't focused that much on programming after finishing university. I studied Mechatronics Engineer and most of the work was focused on assembly and inspection. After that, I tried to go into the freelance/entrepreneur world, until one point I found myself programming a website and that was the moment when I decided to become a full-time programmer, because I just found myself focused and enjoying programming the website.

This studio, unlike others, uses kind of Data Oriented Programming... not entirely, but it surely wasn't OOP and the more games come out, the more I'm sure that this programming style is what will remain.

OOP on its own has a lot of issues. Of course you can do great things with it if you use it correctly, but you can do better things with another mindset, for example, DOP.

That said, Unity's DOTS technology focuses on the programming mindset and I find it quite interesting that it relates a lot to the things that I used to do in the studio and gave me a lot of familiarity.

For some time I've been a follower of this channel CodeMonkey, whom I really respect as a game developer and content creator, and one of his areas is DOTS. I did a course from him and it is very important, when you study something, to practice it with something practical, no matter the size.

So now I'm here developing a game with something that I learned and hopefully (well it also depends on the marketing strategy) earn some good money.

Thanks.
